Having Fun in College – Is it Possible?

The short answer – yes. It is totally possible. The point of college is to earn a degree, decide what you want to do for a career, and study and work hard to get there. However, that isn’t all there is to it. Sure, it may seem like that during finals week and some other weeks throughout the semester that your work load is high, however you can do so much more in college than just studying 24/7. Of course, this also comes with a warning – don’t make college more about having fun than it is about studying. Your degree, classes, and studying should always come first, just don’t forget to make time for yourself.

There are plenty of things you can get involved in both on campus and off campus to enjoy yourself and have fun. First of all, you can join some clubs, organizations, and sports that support your hobbies and also will help you make new friends. Plus, it will get you out of your dorm room for a bit so you’ll feel more like a part of your college and community than you may otherwise.

Explore the area around your college. Whether you’re an hour, a few states, or a whole other country away from home, explore your area. Even if you’re an hour away from home, you’ll find that there’s so much out there that you didn’t know about, whether it is a coffee shop or independent bookstore. Go to parks to study for a change – sure, you’ll be doing classwork, but you’ll be doing it in a new and relaxing environment that will allow you to have fun while you’re doing this necessary thing.

Look up events in the area of your college. Whether it is a concert, a festival, or a comic convention, if you have time for these activities in your schedule, you should still do these things you enjoy. Just because you’re in college, that doesn’t mean you can’t!

Have a free weekend with no homework? If you’re closer to home, then spend the weekend visiting family and friends. Or you can gather up some of your new friends and go on a mini-vacation somewhere nearby college yet far enough to make it feel like an actual get-away.

With how busy your college schedule may be, you may need to make time for these fun activities that have nothing to do with your college courses. However, it is worth it and it will make the time that you are studying and working on homework so much better because you know you just had a break from it and that you have another break from it coming up. It’s important to take these breaks to recharge so you don’t get burned out on your college classes and homework.
